The Old Space isn’t the New Space! with Doug Mohney - Part 2
Wednesday Oct 14, 2020
Wednesday Oct 14, 2020
If you used your phone, tablet, car, etc. you almost certainly connected to a Satellite. There are Satellite constellations being deployed, right now, to deliver more connectivity to more people than in the history of the world. They are also able to see more of our lives – whether we want them too or not. Is that a good thing, a bad thing, or just a thing? Join me in this two-part series with Doug Mohney, editor in chief of Satellite IT Bridge as we discuss this and more, on the next QTS Experience.
About Our Guest:
https://www.spaceitbridge.com/
Space IT Bridge is focused on helping business leaders and IT decision makers understand emerging business opportunities delivered by a growing number of space-based satellite networks. The new SpaceIT site will track the business climate of this emerging and exciting market, including: standards debates, deployment case studies, new product launches, mergers and acquisitions, financial results and IPOs, and more.
This effort will help new space companies on how to leverage best practices in IT, such as open standards, open source, cloud computing, APIs, Big Data, analytics, and machine learning. At the same time, Space IT Bridge will help the IT and consumer worlds recognize and embrace new opportunities offered by cubesats, imaging, and low earth orbit (LEO) satellite clouds.
A principal at Cidera Analytics, Doug has been working and writing about IT and satellite industries for over 20 years. His real world experience including stints at two start-ups, a commercial internet service provider that went public in 1997 for $150 million and a satellite internet broadband company. Follow him on Twitter @DougonIPComm.

Energy Storage: Sustainability's Secret Ingredient with Dr. Daniel Kammen
Wednesday Sep 23, 2020
Wednesday Sep 23, 2020
All intelligent people today are talking about Sustainable energy – How do we buy it, how do we source it, and how do we use it. This is particularly true if you’re a very large consumer of those resources, and Data centers are. But in order to use renewable energy you have to have energy storage to carry the load when the wind isn’t blowing and the sun isn’t shining – so how does that work, and how do we use machine learning and data analytics to make the best decisions? .. Professor Daniel Kammen, Director of the Renewable and Appropriate Energy Lab at UC Berkley, explains how on the next QTS Experience.
About Our Guest:
Dr. Kammen is the Class of 1935 Distinguished Professor of Energy at the University of California, Berkeley, with parallel appointments in the Energy and Resources Group, the Goldman School of Public Policy, and the department of Nuclear Engineering. He was appointed the first Environment and Climate Partnership for the Americas (ECPA) Fellow by Secretary of State Hilary R. Clinton in April 2010.
Kammen is the founding director of the Renewable and Appropriate Energy Laboratory (RAEL), Co-Director of the Berkeley Institute of the Environment, and Director of the Transportation Sustainability Research Center. He has founded or is on the board of over 10 companies, and has served the State of California and US federal government in expert and advisory capacities.
Dr. Kammen was educated in physics at Cornell and Harvard, and held postdoctoral positions at the California Institute of Technology and Harvard. He was Assistant Professor and Chair of the Science, Technology and Environmental Policy Program at the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University before moving to the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Kammen has served as a contributing or coordinating lead author on various reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change since 1999. The IPCC shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. He serves on the Advisory Committee for Energy & Environment for the X-Prize Foundation.
During 2010-2011 Kammen served as the World Bank Group’s Chief Technical Specialist for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency. He was appointed to this newly-created position in October 2010, in which he provided strategic leadership on policy, technical, and operational fronts. The aim is to enhance the operational impact of the Bank’s renewable energy and energy efficiency activities while expanding the institution’s role as an enabler of global dialogue on moving energy development to a cleaner and more sustainable pathway.
He has authored or co-authored 12 books, written more than 300 peer-reviewed journal publications, testified more than 40 times to U.S. state and federal congressional briefings, and has provided various governments with more than 50 technical reports. Dr. Kammen also served for many years on the Technical Review Board of the Global Environment Facility. He is a frequent contributor to or commentator in international news media, including Newsweek, Time, The New York Times, The Guardian, and The Financial Times. Kammen has appeared on 60 Minutes (twice), Nova, Frontline, and hosted the six-part Discovery Channel series Ecopolis. Dr. Kammen is a Permanent Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences, a fellow of the American Physical Society. In the US, he serves on two National Academy of Sciences boards and panels.

Using Technology To Regrow Decimated Forests with Jad Daley
Wednesday Sep 09, 2020
Wednesday Sep 09, 2020
What do data centers and forests have in common? In this episode, I sit down with CEO of American Forest, Jad Daley. I was amazed at how relevant our conversation was for today. Bringing together science and technology through big data and analytics with a heart for managing our natural resources in a smart and bi partisan way – you will love this conversation – on the next QTS experience.
About American Forests:
"We have worked longer than any national nonprofit conservation organization in the United States to protect and restore the country’s forests. Since our founding in 1875, we have been the pathfinders for the forest conservation movement. In the early 1900s, for example, we rallied forest advocates to champion creation of the U.S. Forest Service. In 2018, we won a decade-long campaign persuading Congress to provide stable funding for preventing and fighting forest fires.
Now we are focused on building a reforestation movement in America, from cities to large, rural landscapes. We all rely on forests in order to survive and thrive, given the power they have to filter our air and water, provide jobs, mitigate climate change and more. But our forests are being degraded and destroyed at a rapid pace and large scale.
If we take care of our forests, they will take care of us."
